Initiatives in marine and mangrove sanctuary have been started at Villa Igang/Puerto del Mar. The marine sanctuary will not only enhance the marine environment but also increase the fish harvest to as much as five times when the marine sanctuary will improve the income level of fish folks.

On the other hand, the mangrove sanctuary will improve the environment by preventing erosion and strengthening the land sea demarcation where the mangroves caution the impact of strong waves that may impinge the shoreline. The mangroves serve as the habitat of the various birds and wildlife that improve ecological balance. It is in the mangroves where the various fishes breed and thus complement the marine sanctuary.

Seagrasses serve an important role in marine ecological balance. With the cooperation of the University of New Hampshire, seagrass monitoring is being done at Villa Igang/Puerto del Mar which is the site of the marine Training Center of JBLFMU. This site is the second site in the country. The first site is in Puerto Galera being managed by the Marine Science Institute of the University of the Philippines. These two sites are part of the world-wide monitoring of seagrasses with its international headquarters at the University of New Hampshire.

Environmental consciousness and cleaning of the shoreline are important concerns and there are on-going activities along this line.
