D/C John Francis M. Babiera, a former Filipino Editor of The Dolphin and an alumnus of John B. Lacson Foundation Maritime University (Arevalo) Inc., made waves in the Ilonggo art scene after his artwork entitled "Floating" was displayed at the HÁNAG: Emergent Perspectives exhibit.

For Babiera, being part of the exhibit is an honor and a privilege, giving him a sense of belonging among Iloilo's finest creatives.

"It made me realize na I was given a space - na I belong in the room," Babiera said.

“Floating” is described as a letter from his past self to his future self, portraying themes of stagnation, survival, and hope.  "Hope is the paper boat that keeps me afloat," Babiera said, describing the message behind his work.

More than a milestone, it has also become the bridge in the gap between Babiera's seafaring career and thriving artistry.

"As an amateur artist, being part of HÁNAG Exhibt is a humbling experience to be included on a roster of veteran artists, filmmakers, and creatives here in Iloilo. It made me realize that I can be a seafarer and an artist as well," he said.

Also going by the name "Pixelboi" online, Babiera is a pixel artist known for creating nostalgic works that capture the quiet solitude of life at sea, ocean horizons, and marine life.

His passion for art began during his time at JBLFMU-A when he became part of the Lapis Guild Organization and the university's film production, in which he honed his artistic craft and produced short films and documentaries.

Currently, he is pursuing his bachelor's degree in the same university while working as a freelance pixel art illustrator, drawing inspiration from his experiences as a young seafarer.

HÁNAG: Emergent Perspectives features works from Iloilo's artists, filmmakers, and designers, curated by Director Elvert Bañares and will be running from August 17-25, at the North Point Event Center of SM City Iloilo.
