With the objective of fostering open distance education in the Philippines, John B. Lacson Foundation Maritime University (Arevalo), Inc. officially became one out of the eight Distance Education (DE) providers in the country.

The ceremony was virtually attended by Dr. Ronald Raymond L. Sebastian, Chief Executive Officer and Capt. Alfred G. Espinosa, Ph.D., JBLFMU-Arevalo Administrator to articulate the university's dedication to move onwards with the Consortium's aims to build a resilient, responsive, and innovative educational system.

The Memorandum of Agreement (MOA) was signed last January 31 at Benguet State University. This aims to unite efforts towards more exchanges of ideas and expertise and to develop the quality of distance education in the Philippines at a greater distance.

The signing of the Memorandum of Agreement, spelling out the Consortium of Open and Distance Education Providers in the Philippines (CODEPP), was a historical milestone as it was formalized at the very place where it was first conceptualized.

According to BSU Open University Director, Dr. Leonard T. Apilis, the binding purpose of coming together as a Consortium is to work together as collaborators in delivering quality distance education to all Filipinos, following the mandate of RA 10650 or the Open Distance Learning Law.

Following the MOA Signing Ceremony held on February 1-2, the founding members discussed the three-year plan for CODEPP based on its Vision-Mission-Goal Statement as part of the Strategic Planning Workshop. JBLFMU-AREVALO was represented by Dr. Geneva M. Eler (Dean of the Graduate School), Dr. Eric Madera (QA Manager), Dr. Emely Palomero (University Registrar) and Dr. Maria Cristina Arante (Instructional Materials Designer, JeL).

With the combined commitments in pushing forward distance education in the Philippines, the Consortium scheduled the next meeting on March at Batac City, Ilocos Norte with Mariano Marcos State University (MMSU) as the host.
