The Philippine Transmarine Carriers, Inc. (PTC), through its RISE Program for Safe Schools, successfully conducted the Volunteer Network Establishment and Masterclass Session: Simple Tools on Hazard and Weather Monitoring at the CSM Function Hall, John B. Lacson Foundation Maritime University –(Molo) Inc. The activity brought together student leaders and volunteers to strengthen disaster preparedness, climate resilience, and emergency response capabilities within the university community.
The program featured Mr. Josh P. McCarver, Lead Program Officer, Talent Acquisition Group (TAG), Philippine Transmarine Carriers, Inc., and Hector Manuel Jon Brizuela, EnP., SO2, National Training Supervisor, Sea Mariners and Manager, Talent Acquisition Group, Philippine Transmarine Carriers, Inc., who served as the resource speakers and facilitators. Through their expertise and interactive discussions, participants gained valuable knowledge on disaster risk reduction, volunteerism, and the importance of building resilient educational institutions.
The activity was attended by NSTP–CWTS students, NSTP–ROTC cadets, Philippine Red Cross Youth (RCY) Volunteers, Supreme Student Government (SSG) Officers, faculty advisers, and university personnel. Their active participation demonstrated the university's commitment to fostering a culture of preparedness and collaborative emergency response.
One of the highlights of the activity was the Volunteer Network Establishment, where participants were introduced to the objectives of the RISE Program for Safe Schools and encouraged to become advocates of disaster resilience in their respective organizations and communities. The session emphasized the importance of volunteer engagement, leadership, and inter-organizational cooperation in promoting safer schools and strengthening community preparedness.
The Masterclass Session on Simple Tools for Hazard and Weather Monitoring equipped participants with practical knowledge on identifying potential hazards and utilizing readily available weather monitoring tools and information to anticipate and prepare for emergencies. The resource speakers demonstrated how weather advisories, hazard maps, rainfall monitoring, and early warning systems can support informed decision-making before, during, and after disasters. Participants also learned the significance of situational awareness, timely dissemination of information, and coordinated response in minimizing disaster risks.
The activity concluded, where participants shared insights and discussed strategies for enhancing disaster preparedness initiatives within the university. The successful implementation of the RISE Program reaffirmed the strong partnership between Philippine Transmarine Carriers, Inc. and John B. Lacson Foundation Maritime University (Molo) Inc. in advancing disaster resilience, volunteerism, leadership development, and the promotion of safe and resilient learning environments.
Through this initiative, participants left the program better equipped with the knowledge, skills, and commitment to serve as advocates of disaster preparedness and safety, contributing to the university's vision of creating a resilient academic community capable of responding effectively to natural and human-induced hazards.
