By: Mdpn. Francis Baldemor

Eight victories and counting.

Commitment to advancing scientific knowledge and dedication to enhancing education was the driving force of Dr. Brian Gil S. Sarinas as he secured the Best Oral Presenter (Champion) award at the National Organization of Science Teachers and Educators (NOSTE) 2023 International Research Conference, Training Workshops, and Biennial Convention last September 24.

This is the eighth award of the Research Coordinator of John B. Lacson Foundation Maritime University (Arevalo), Inc. from NOSTE, a journey that began with his first victory in 2015.

Dr. Sarinas' co-authored study together with Dr. Roderick R. Germo, Bartimeues Nathan Wiederhold and Tom Lichenberg from the University of Applied Sciences-Netherlands, titled "Selected Water Physico-Chemical Characteristics of Iloilo Batiano River, Philippines: A Baseline Study," was an addition to his list of accolades within the research organization. This paper also clinched the Best Paper (Champion) award in NOSTE.

"Someone asked me if I ever get tired of joining events like this. My answer has always been the same: I will get never tired of it, for these are the things that I am passionate about—helping others through my research," Dr. Sarinas, whose researches has been published locally and internationally, shared in an interview with The Dolphin.

This year alone, Dr. Sarinas' study regarding the contributing factors and strategies applied onboard ship for the development of a booklet to enhance seafarers' mental health was published in TransNav, a known European maritime journal.

"I cannot do this alone. This accolade is not only my share for humanity but ultimately to God, my country, and my beloved institution—JBLFMU," the Research Coordinator remarked.

Meanwhile, the university's Safety Officer 2/M Karl Danielle H. Sira participated and presented his study titled "Status of Students’ Mental Health during Pandemic: Basis for the Development of Student Enhancement Program." At the same event, Dr. Roderick R. Germo, a BSMT faculty, also presented his study titled, “Effectiveness of Problem-based Learning (PBL) on Maritime Courses in a Blended Learning Modality.”

NOSTE is a research organization based in Iloilo City spearheaded by a group of educators to "provide professional development opportunities to teachers in basic and higher education in the Philippines."

Additionally, this accomplishment contributes to the maritime research community, bolstering JBLFMU's reputation with auditing bodies like the Philippine Association of Colleges and Universities Commission on Accreditation (PACUCOA) and the Commission on Higher Education (CHED) Autonomous Status.
