The Women in Maritime Philippines (WIMAPHIL) of John B. Lacson Foundation Maritime University (Arevalo), Inc. gathered at the university's library to celebrate the yearly Girl Talks last March 22.
Themed, "VoyageHER: Navigating the Seas of Experience in Maritime Professions," Capt. Luina A. Cuadra and 2/M Majella Angelie Parreño-Albances, were invited as guest speakers and shared their venture, tips, and experiences to become seafarers.
"My captain once told me that I changed his perception on the capabilities of women. Now that I am a captain, let this be a testament to believe in yourself even if you cannot," Capt. Cuadra said.
Moreover, 2/M Parreño-Albances added her experiences and discussed how social media romanticizes the seafaring profession and that "no two sea experiences are alike."
In a video message, D/C Kezia Camille Tenefrancia, former President of WIMAPHIL, and 3/M Shaina Marie Macahilig expressed and reflected upon their experience on-board.
"Be prepared to have blood, sweat and tears. This profession is male-dominated, and so be the rose among the thorns and show them what we are capable of," D/C Tenefrancia stated.
In addition, D/C Airah Faith Hortillas and D/C Alexie Joy Tanate also partook the event and shared the difficulties they encountered as women onboard ship.
Dr. Geneva M. Eler, Treasurer of WIMAPHIL Western Visayas, oriented the guests and participants coming from the different departments regarding the significance of WIMAPHIL to kickstart the event.
The Girl Talks, in line with the Women's Month Celebration, is an avenue for women to share their invaluable experiences as a SHEfarer.
