Midshipman Jhonard P. Quirino, the current Editor In Chief (EIC) of The Dolphin, brought another achievement to the publication after securing a spot in this year's 48th Batch of Philippine Information Agency (PIA) IWAG awardees in Region VI, May 19.
Looking back, former EICs' 2/M Keft Sobredo and D/C Francis Baldemor also received the same title in 2014 and 2024, respectively.
An almost five-decade-old honor, which began in 1977, acknowledged Mdpn. Quirino and 12 fellow college journalists in embracing their skills in the campus publication endeavor, and advocacy in journalism and Development Communication (DevCom).
On a Facebook post, Mdpn. Quirino highlighted the role of journalism in his life, "From the very beginning, I have always believed that genuine journalism isn't about collecting accoladesโit's about collecting courage. It's the courage to tell stories that matter, to shed light on voices often unheard, and to remain steadfast in integrity even without recognition. This award is simply a reminderโnot of victory, but of responsibility," the current EIC stated.
Furthermore, the third-year cadet is an outgoing EIC, who has served the publication for two yearsโbagging notable awards in PIA Journ Talk Series and College Press Conference in Feature Writing (Filipino) and Writing for Science, Health and Environment (Filipino).
The IWAG Award is a large plan of action projected by PIA to give honor to the campus paper writers who exclusively excel in development communication.
