Diving into the world of technology, students, and faculty members of John B. Lacson Foundation Maritime University (Arevalo), Inc. were invited to the Western Visayas Innovative Startup Festival 2025, held at the Iloilo Convention Center (ICC), from September 16 to 18, 2025.
According to the Department of Science and Technology (DOST) Regional Office VI, it aims to “strengthen the regional ecosystem of startups and build sustainable and technology-driven enterprises in the region by building connections and bringing inspiration to the startup community.”
This year’s theme, “Shaping a Vibrant Future for the Region’s Startup Ecosystem,” highlights the importance of science, technology, and innovation as key drivers of regional and national development, providing students and educators the opportunity to gain insights and explore the startup landscape.
Forty-five first-year Bachelor of Science in Marine Transportation (BSMT) students took part in the various programs on the first day, including the Tech Exhibit which featured innovations from tech firms, startups, and a range of interactive activities by various participating universities and institutions. Sixty more second-year BSMT students were able to participate in yesterday's exhibit, and another sixty are set to attend today.
The Department of Science and Technology VI launched the first Western Visayas Innovative Startup Fest in Iloilo City in accordance with the implementation of the RA 11337 or the Innovative Startup Act. Its objective is anchored in supporting the growth of new ideas that result in the development and commercialization of innovation-driven products and services.
Participation in this event aligns with the following United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs): Quality Education (SDG 4); Decent Work and Economic Growth (SDG 8); Industry, Innovation, and Infrastructure (SDG 9), Sustainable Cities and Communities (SDG 11), and Partnerships for the Goals (SDG 17).
