Western Visayas is marking the 25th National Maritime Week (NMW) from September 22 to 29, 2024, honoring the significant contributions of Filipino seafarers to the nation and the world.

The celebration officially kicked off today, September 23, with a series of activities, starting with the simultaneous blowing of ship horns and dressing of vessels and schools across the region.  A Eucharistic mass at St. Clements Church in Lapaz, Iloilo, followed the morning rituals.

A Walk for a Cause, organized in partnership with various maritime schools and government agencies like the Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) and the Maritime Industry Authority (MARINA), brought participants to the Iloilo Sports Complex Gymnasium, where the main program is being held.

In addition, a Photo and Equipment Exhibit is taking place at the Festive Walk Mall, one of the event's co-presenters, showcasing maritime innovations and tools.

“National Maritime Week in Western Visayas is a regional celebration held in the last week of September, focusing on the maritime industry's importance. Activities include educational seminars, sports, environmental initiatives, and community events,” according to NMW-Western Visayas organizers.

The event, presented by the Philippine Coast Guard, is co-presented by Women in Maritime Philippines (WIMAPHIL) and St. Therese MTC Colleges, and aims to highlight the industry's role in both the local and global economy through various educational and community-centered initiatives.
