JBLFMU-Molo hosted an HIV and AIDS awareness campaign today, November 6, at the university gymnasium. The event featured Angelito P. Sanguyo, president and founder of RED Charity Community, who discussed the crucial importance of HIV awareness for maritime professionals.
In his talk, Sanguyo emphasized the unique vulnerabilities that seafarers face regarding sexually transmitted infections (STIs). According to *Officer of the Watch*, HIV prevalence among seafarers is notably high, with studies indicating rates as high as 22% in specific regions, particularly Southeast Asia. This high rate is attributed to factors such as high-risk sexual behaviors, limited access to healthcare, and insufficient HIV prevention resources, all of which are common challenges for those in the maritime industry.
The campaign aims to empower students with knowledge and encourage preventive measures, highlighting the need for vigilance and awareness as they prepare to enter the maritime profession.
