Story and Pubmat by Mdpn. Joshua Tanciano

Several alumni of John B. Lacson Foundation Maritime University (JBLFMU) recently took part in an international maritime forum held at Malaysia last April 27 to 28.

The event, which marked the 16th "K" Line Shipping Management Singapore (KLSM-SG) and the 1st ONESEA Solutions (OSS) Forum, drew top executives, ship managers, and maritime officers for two days of industry dialogue and innovation sharing.

Among the almost 14 present alumni as deck and engine officers from JBLFMU was Capt. Kennette F. Clavel, Vice President for Operations at Ventis Maritime Corporation and a 1996 graduate of JBLFMU-Arevalo.

Captain Clavel, who was also a past graduation speaker at JBLFMU-Arevalo, emphasized the value of such engagements. โ€œIt is part of our companyโ€™s commitment to attend forums like these, not only to stay informed, [but] also to ensure that the welfare of our crew remains at the center of our operations,โ€ he said.

Ventis Maritime Corporation, a Philippine manning agency, has maintained a steady partnership with JBLFMU since the 90s. With five principal company clients including OSS, the agency continues to tap JBLFMU graduates.

JBLFMU, with campuses in Arevalo, Molo, and Bacolod, is widely recognized as one of the countryโ€™s leading maritime institutions, contributing to the manpower of seafarers through global partnerships, curriculum modernization, and strong industry linkages.

Having pioneered maritime education in the Visayas and Mindanao, it has consistently providing seafarers since 1948, "becoming a major supplier of Filipino marine officers, with a contribution of about 12% annually," according to the university's student handbook.

The highlights may be seen in 2001 when JBLFMU supplied 12.47% of the deck and 12.35% of the engine officers of the Philippines, and in 2005 with 12% of the new entrants to the profession.
