Last November 28 and recently, December 10, selected The Seagull editors and staff conducted their Development Communication fieldwork at the Pototan Mental Health Unit in Brgy. Rumbang, Pototan, Iloilo.

The visit aimed to deepen the team’s understanding of mental health services and the realities faced by both patients and health workers in the community.
During the fieldwork, the team observed the unit’s daily operations, including how patients are assessed, admitted, and assisted by the staff. They noted the careful coordination among medical personnel, as well as the efforts to maintain a safe and supportive environment for individuals seeking care.
Conversations with healthcare workers highlighted the importance of accessible mental health services, especially in rural areas where resources remain limited.

The team also discussed persistent stigmas surrounding mental health—barriers that continue to shape public perception and discourage many from seeking help. Staff members emphasized the need for sustained advocacy, community education, and improved support systems to ensure that individuals receive timely and compassionate care.
The fieldwork provided valuable insight into the challenges and progress within local mental health initiatives, reinforcing the role of responsible storytelling in promoting awareness and strengthening community understanding.
