From April 13 to 16, 2026, a comprehensive biophysical assessment was successfully conducted at the IBMS Mangrove Reserve to evaluate the current status of its coastal and marine ecosystems, particularly mangroves, seagrass beds, coral reefs, and associated fish populations. The activity aimed to generate updated scientific data that will serve as a basis for strengthening the site’s conservation strategies and improving its overall operation and management.
The assessment was carried out by a multi-sectoral technical team composed of representatives from JBLFMU, the LGU of Nueva Valencia, DENR PENRO Guimaras, GENRO, and PDRRMO. This collaborative effort ensured a holistic and science-based approach in gathering field data, combining academic expertise, local government support, and environmental management experience.
Standard assessment methods were applied across ecosystems, including species identification, density measurements, and habitat condition assessments for mangroves, seagrass, coral reefs, and fish populations. Additionally, bird and bat species were monitored to provide a broader understanding of the area’s biodiversity. Initial observations highlight the need for sustained monitoring and targeted conservation efforts. The results of the assessment will be used to enhance the operation and management of the IBMS Mangrove Reserve, guiding future conservation initiatives, rehabilitation programs, and policy development.
