Igang Bay Marine Sanctuary
The Igang Bay Marine Sanctuary (IBMS) is a collaborative marine conservation initiative of the three campuses of the John B. Lacson Foundation Maritime University—JBLFMU-Molo, JBLFMU-Arevalo, and JBLCF-Bacolod—implemented through their CSR and Community Extension Services programs. Strongly aligned with SDG 14 (Life Below Water), SDG 13 (Climate Action), and SDG 17 (Partnerships for the Goals), the IBMS highlights the University’s commitment to science-based and community-centered sustainability. Established in December 2019 and officially launched on June 10, 2020, the sanctuary was developed in partnership with the Local Government Unit of Nueva Valencia, Guimaras, and supported technically by DENR, BFAR, GENRO, and nearby coastal communities.
The initiative traces its roots to 2006, when JBLFMU engaged Dr. Angel C. Alcala to conduct a biodiversity assessment of Igang Bay. His findings revealed an ecologically rich yet increasingly threatened marine environment due to cyanide fishing, compressor diving, and trawling. These insights mobilized JBLFMU to convene stakeholders, form a multi-sectoral Technical Working Group, and develop a comprehensive management plan.
Today, the IBMS stands as a model for effective coastal resource management. It strengthens legal protection, promotes community engagement, restores marine biodiversity, and enhances climate resilience—supporting sustainable fisheries, improved livelihoods, and long-term food security for coastal communities
