ABC+ PROJECT WRAPS UP; VOLUNTEERS RECEIVE RECOGNITION

Exemplifying the university’s advocacy for Education, students, faculty and staff, Coast Guard officers, organization members and other volunteers received recognition from Department of Education (DepEd) through the Advancing Basic Education in the Philippines (ABC+) Project for their volunteer efforts for early-grade learners all over Panay, February 20, 2023.

Children will be given opportunity to comfortably learn as volunteers rendered service in packing learning materials to be used by learners affected by Typhoon Paeng.

Organized by United States Agency International Development (USAID) and RTI International, The Asia Foundation, SIL LEAD, and Florida State University, this program is in partnership with John B. Lacson Foundation Maritime University (Arevalo), Inc.

Ms. Ina Aquino, ABC+ Project Chief, welcomed the attendees with a speech emphasizing the importance of reading, communicating, counting, and emotional learning of early education for those who were affected by the typhoon.

Moreover, Dr. Thomas LeBlanc, USAID Philippines Education Director, gave appreciation to the volunteers, especially to the active participation of the university.

"Engagement with different stakeholders will lead not only for partnership but can be valuable for time, skill, efforts, and resources. We are creating a cohesive, strong, and coherent environment. Tuloy-tuloy ang edukasyon; tulong-tulong tayong lahat." Dr. LeBlanc stated.

"My heart is full to have this endeavor in our community. The spirit of volunteerism runs in our blood of being a Lacsonian; the culture of our campus being passed by generation to generation. Let us continue to spread our wings," Capt. Espinosa, Administrator, quipped.

Novelyn M. Vilchez, Ph.D., CESO VI, Schools Division Superintendent, DepEd SDO Iloilo City, ended the event with a quote: “Volunteerism is not for all. This is only exclusive for people who are possessing good spirit. Thus, volunteerism is a spiritual-fulfilling activity”.

Themed "ABC+: Advancing Basic education in the Philippines", this program aims to ensure learning continuity for K-3 learners through the provision of learning materials.
