The Commission on Higher Education (CHED) in Region VI has recognized John B. Lacson Foundation Maritime University (Arevalo), Inc. (JBLFMU-A) faculty research as one of the 10 best research papers in the 1st Region VI ASEAN (Association of Southeast Asian Nation) Research Conference 2023.

With the title “The Extent of Application on Hard and Soft Skills Onboard Ship: Basis for Development of Program to Enhance Seafarers’ Skills,” the paper was headed by 2/M Jester De La Cruz and co-authored by Capt. Nestor L. Baluya and Capt. Kester R. Ledesma.

“We are beyond blessed because our work has been recognized by experts in the field and that it has the potential to make a significant contribution to the field,” 2/M De La Cruz expressed.

With over 50 manuscripts submitted at the conference and being chosen as one of the papers to discuss in Regional Research, 2/M Dela Cruz added that their feat was "shocking and overwhelming."

“Although we are not inclined to research, we did our best to make it the best it could be and presented it well. When we were talking about this topic, we didn't just talk about what interests us, but also about what can benefit the industry we chose,” Capt. Ledesma stated.

Moreover, they added that the core of this research is to expand the Maritime Industry's potential and opportunities partnered with unique set of skills and to identify ideas where seafarers need additional training and development.

The conference seeks to give opportunities for the faculty researchers to share their research outputs, gain insights into the latest trends in ASEAN-related research, strengthen networks and linkages with other HEIs in the region, and participate in the shaping of the future of ASEAN.
