AUGUST PAGHIRINUGPONG STARS IN BUWAN NG WIKA!

For the month of August, the teachers and staff of the SHS Department once again immersed themselves in fun-filled activities as part of Paghirinugpong , the monthly virtual de-stressing event initiated by the SHS OIC-Principal, Mrs. Mary Mae Jun P. Esmaya

The program was anchored in the celebration of Buwan ng Wika where the participants wore DIY(do-it-yourself) traditional Filipino attire. Moreover, they were also encouraged to speak in Filipino all throughout the duration of the event.
As the overall chairpersons of the event, Mr. Stephen Bajande and Ms, Jean Rose Genova prepared creative and interactive activities such as ZOOMBa ITO? (a Zumba session featuring various Filipino dances); SIGE BI? SIGE NGA? (a paint-me-a-picture-inspired game); KANTA NGA TAYO!!!(videoke sessions); LIGTAS NA ESPASYO:IHAYAG ANG IYONG KWENTO (a psychosocial activity); i-Translate mo yern! (English to Filipino Translation Challenge); and PELI KULANG PA BA? (a guess the movie title game) were the shared laughter and joy of everyone from doing these parts transpired through the virtual screen.

The highlight of the event was LIGTAS NA ESPASYO:IHAYAG ANG IYONG KWENTO, a psychosocial activity, where the participants read different short stories with various universal themes. Some talked about politics, personal experiences, current events, among others pertaining to the topic discussed in each plot of assigned literature. Learnings from each one’s introspection and opinion were the biggest takeaway by everyone. Such a heartwarming experience!
Captain Ace Ocampo, the guest performer of the event, surely brought a good time to everybody through a song number! One of the best in the program.

The event is intended to enhance the general wellbeing of the SHS Faculty and Staff and help them meet the demands of work and provide them with opportunities for individual growth and development.
The activities under this program will de-stress the faculty and staff. This will allow them to relieve some tensions at work. Moreover, this will also be a way of team building for the department. Further, this hopes to improve their productivity of so teaching and learning process would be effective as possible.

In order to build stronger relationships, come together as a team, and declutter in a relaxed environment, the JBLFMU-Arevalo employees participated in the Annual Teambuilding and Socialization activities held at Damires Hills and Tierra Verde Resort in Janiuay, Iloilo last July 7-8.

Themed “JBLFMU Arevalo @75: Nurturing Relationships and Creating Memories through Engaging Activities,” the event was spearheaded by the Human Resource Head Dr. Cristy H. Cangrejo in collaboration with the ILead Trainings.

During the first day, the participants collaborated by creating their Group Names and entries for the "Cheers and Yells". This was followed by a series of interactive games where participants were given the opportunity to share their realizations afterwards. The night ended with music and fun as the employees jammed with the invited musicians.

The highlight of the second-day event were seminars on Mental Health and Value Talk about Integrity by 2/M Mario Dumaicos and the Implementation of the University Data Privacy Policies by Capt. Alfred Espinosa, Ph.D.

The entire trip was packed with opportunities for co-worker collaboration, improved communication, and team development among JA employees.

For God, gold, and glory.

Driven by passion and determination, John B. Lacson Foundation Maritime University (JBLFMU) Dolphins denied their competitors a taste of triumph as they secured 25 gold medals, 11 silvers, and 10 bronzes during the Private Schools Athletic Association (PRISAA) National Games held at Zamboanga City, July 13-19.

After bagging an unprecedented number of medals, the Dolphins were proudly declared as the Champions for Tertiary Men, Champions for Secondary Boys, Champions for Secondary Girls, and 1st Runner Up for Tertiary Women.

Mdpn. John Christian Bandejas, the lone representative of JBLFMU-Arevalo, brought two Gold medals in 4x100m Freestyle relay with 3:57.98 and 4x100m Medley relay with 4:24.74. He also seized two Bronze medals in 100m Breaststroke with 1:14.58 and 200m Breaststroke with 2:43.67.

The 2nd year Bachelor of Science in Marine Transportation (BSMT) Bandejas stated that his victory was not only for him but for the "greater glory of those who helped him along the journey and for God."

Meanwhile, this tenacious team of skillful swimmers from other JBLFMU units included Adriana Yulo who won four golds, one silver, and two bronzes; Michelle Ann Adorio who won two golds, one silver, and one bronze; Ellgine Karl Arsenal who won one gold, one silver, and three bronzes; Rene Arvin Celiz who won one gold, and Regan Garbanzos who won two golds and two bronzes for the tertiary level.

Their younger brothers and sisters in the secondary level were composed of Georjeana Deb Plenago who won three golds and four silvers; Alyssandra Monique Sorbito who won one gold and two silvers; William Morante who won two golds; David Carl Capablanca who won one silver, and Marvic Eguides who won one gold.

Moreover, Hans Inigo Parreño was hailed as the Most Outstanding Swimmer as he secured a whopping six golds and one silver for the team.

It is to be noted that Parreño, Yulo, Arsenal, and Plenago were the ones who lit the cauldron and led the Oath of Sportsmanship during the opening ceremony of the JBLFMU's 75th Foundation Week and were known as "the most outstanding swimmers and most bombarded athletes of Western Visayas."

“Mawawakasan ang kahirapan, kung lahat ay tataya para sa bayan.”

This was the resounding call of the 28 students from John B. Lacson Foundation Maritime University (Arevalo), Inc. as they participated in Gawad Kalinga Community Development Foundation, Inc. Bayani Challenge 2023, held in New Lucena, Iloilo.

Dubbed as the country's biggest volunteerism event, the Bayani Challenge aimed at uplifting communities and ending poverty from June 8-12.

In an interview, Community Extension Services (CES) Officer, Mrs. Mirazol D. Dionson lauded the students' active involvement, highlighting the institution's deep commitment to community development.

"They have proven that the youth are really the backbone of our nation as they selflessly contribute their time and skills to this initiative," she added.

Throughout the five-day event, Lacsonians participated in various activities such as Kusina ng Kalinga, House Build, Paraisong Pambata, Kalinga sa Kalusugan, Sports Program, Kalinga sa Kalikasan, Kalinga Night, and Disaster Preparedness.

"The connections I have made and the impact we have created together have inspired me to continue serving my community and be a catalyst for positive change," said Mark Jolian Boltron, one of the Lacsonian volunteers.

JBLFMU-Arevalo, through its strong Community Extension Services (CES) and the involvement of its students in initiatives like Gawad Kalinga's Bayani Challenge, continues to make strides in fostering a culture of volunteerism.

Earlier this year, the university collaborated with Advancing Basic Education in the Philippines project (ABC+) and different volunteer groups to pack and distribute school supplies to affected Typhoon Paeng victims.

The provisions of cleaning materials, teacher's kits, and learning kits are estimated to reach 135 public elementary schools, benefitting 800,000 teachers and 25,000 learners in Region VI.

The JBLFMU-Arevalo Graduate school representatives  recently attended the Seminar-workshop on Institutional Implementation of Open Distance eLearning. This was part of the "forged commitments on the continuous efforts to push forward distance education” in the country,  of the Consortium of Open and Distance Education Providers in the Philippines (CODEPP).  The Founding Members of this organization, of which the University is a member, discussed  the plans for CODEPP with a main focus on the outcome for the year 2023. This is for the Founding Members of CODEPP to be accredited and/or ready for accreditation by the Commission on Higher Education (CHED).

Part also of the event is the Memorandum of Agreement (MOA) Signing held between MMSU President, Dr. Shirley Castañeda Agrupis, and UP Open University (UPOU) Chancellor and CODEPP President, Dr. Melinda dela Peña Bandalaria.

For JBLFMU Arevalo ,the ceremony was virtually attended by Dr. Ronald Raymond L. Sebastian, Chief Executive Officer and Capt. Alfred G. Espinosa, Ph.D., JBLFMU-Arevalo Administrator to articulate the university's dedication to move onwards with the Consortium's aims to build a resilient, responsive, and innovative educational system.The Memorandum of Agreement (MOA) was signed last January 31 at Benguet State University

The Consortium is composed of eight higher learning institutions that offer open distance education in the country. These universities are John B. Lacson Foundation Maritime University - Arevalo, Inc, Benguet State University, Cavite State University, Central Luzon State University, Don Mariano Marcos State University, Ifugao State University, Mariano Marcos State University, and UP Open University (UPOU).

The two-day Seminar-Workshop on Institutional Implementation of Open Distance eLearning held last 3-4 April 2023 at Mariano Marcos State University (MMSU), Batac City, Ilocos Norte was actively attended by the Dean of Graduate School, Dr. Geneva M. JBLFMU was awarded as “Model Implementor Award “ as SIKAP Grantee Delivering Higher Education Institution !

SIKAP Grants is a “Scholarships for Instructors’ Knowledge Advancement Program” open to selected Graduate Students in the Masters’ and Doctoral programs.

JBLFMU Graduate School was accredited by CHED as DHEIS  of the SIKAP Grant.

As a Model Implementer Awardee the university exudes timeliness, completeness, consistence adherence and effectiveness and efficiency.

This was awarded during the CHED’s Region 6 29th Founding Anniversary @ WVSU Cultural Center last  May 19, 2023.

With the aim of providing a platform for sharing research findings, fostering stronger relationships among its members, and promoting the latest instructional practices, the 2023 United Federation of Filipino and American Educators (UNIFFIED) Multidisciplinary Research Conference International commenced at John B. Lacson Foundation Maritime University (Molo), Inc. from July 24-26.

Geared towards the theme, "Navigating the Challenges in Education through Unified Initiatives," the event was attended by esteemed faculty members from JBLFMU-Arevalo.

Among them were Dr. Geneva M. Eler, Dean of JBLFMU Graduate School, C/M Virmari S. Tan, Ph.D., Dean of BSMT Department and BSMT Faculty Dr. Mary Jean Dela Cruz and Dr. Roderick Germo. They were acknowledged at the event for their contributions as members of UNIFFIED.

Raising the banner high for JBLFMU-Arevalo, 2/M Aldin Turija bagged 2nd place in his study entitled, "The Use of Moodle and Students' Performance in Protection of the Marine Environment" under the Education & Educational Innovations Strand.

"Preparing for the paper presentation on top of my responsibilities in school is the most challenging part [of my journey]," 2/M Turija stated.

The summit also featured top educational speakers nationally and internationally, among whom were Atty. Marie Louise Araneta-Marcos, the First Lady of the Philippines and instructor of West Visayas State University-College of Law (WVSU-COL), Dr. Joel Tiu Maquilang, Professor of Ateneo De Manila University, Dr. Margarita Consolacion Ballesteros, Department of Education Director IV, Ms. Sandra Hernandez, Elementary School Principal in United States of America, Dr. Carla M. Thompson, Faculty of the University of California, Dr. Roel Palo Anicos, CHED Central Luzon Education Supervisor II, Atty. Angela Trinidad, former Labor Attache in the Philippine Embassy, Atty. Arnedo Valera, International Human Rights Lawyer, and Capt. Alfred G. Espinosa, JBLFMU-Arevalo Administrator.

"Educators should catalyze transformation as they are the agents that the education sector desperately needs," Dr. Edgrado B. Dacpano, President of UNIFFIED, Inc., highlighted in his message.

The three-day summit encompassed various events, including a Multidisciplinary Research Conference International, Salindunong, Awards & Gala Night, and an Educational Tour which is spearheaded by the UNIFFIED,Inc., a non-profit organization of educators with a shared vision of promoting excellence in teaching and community service.

The event was held in collaboration with different tertiary institutions in Western Visayas, including JBLFMU through the leadership of Dr. Eler, Capiz State University, Central Philippine University, and University of San Agustin.

PURPOSE OF WCWS 2023

The purpose of the World Conference on Women’s Studies is to offer participants an enriching opportunity to deepen knowledge of global feminisms along with the theoretical, policy, and personal dimensions of Women’s Studies scholar-activism worldwide, engaging with intersecting fields of Gender and Sexuality Studies and the many disciplines that constitute Women’s Studies—all toward building collaborative partnerships, offering publishing opportunities, and enacting visions of a more equitable and liberal world.

The gathering was dedicated to advancing the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), an ambitious blueprint for a more prosperous, inclusive, and sustainable world.

             Dr. Geneva M. Eler, the Dean of the Graduate School was able to present  virtually her paper : WOMEN SEAFARERS: SHARING THEIR TRIANGLE OF SUCCESS last May 11, 2023.

            The organizers extended  their gratitude for her  active participation in the recently concluded World Conference on Women Studies (WCWS2023).  They also emphasized that her

contributions made a significant impact, and  greatly appreciated her valuable insights and engagement.

Honoring his notable contributions to the maritime industry, Captain Alfred G. Espinosa, Ph.D, Administrator of John B. Lacson Foundation Maritime University (Arevalo), Inc., has been elected to the distinguished title of Associate Fellow of The Nautical Institute.

The Nautical Institute is a Non-Governmental Organization (NGO) with consultative status at the International Maritime Organization (IMO), founded in 1971 with the goal of encouraging and promoting a high standard of qualification, competence, and knowledge for those involved in seagoing craft control.

In a certificate dated May 5, the Associate Fellow of The Nautical Institute grade is given to people who have "significantly impacted the maritime industry through their work at sea, in shoreside management, or by being actively involved in maritime education and training."

This award highlights Capt. Epinosa's passion, knowledge, and steadfast commitment to the improvement of marine safety and practices.

One of the Nautical Institute's top distinctions is Associate Fellow, which is one of the highest grades attainable.

Honoring the diversity and unity of Southeast Asia, John B. Lacson Foundation Maritime University (Arevalo), Inc.’s faculty, staff, and selected students participated in the 2023 Association of South East Asian Nations (ASEAN) Month celebration through cultural festivities.

This year's theme, "ASEAN Matters: Epicentrum of Growth," served as the focal point of the event held at the university's JBL Hall today, August 31.

"As we gather to commemorate the celebration of ASEAN Month, it is my privilege to share with you the profound significance of internalization within our local contexts and the far-reaching implications of internationalization beyond our borders," Dean of JBLFMU-Arevalo Graduate School Dr. Geneva Eler emphasized, highlighting the need for the university to internationalize at home and abroad.

This marks the inaugural event commemorating ASEAN Month at this university.

Meanwhile, University Administrator Capt. Alfred G. Espinosa, Ph.D., graced the event by underscoring his heartfelt appreciation.

“As we celebrate, this is a time to reflect upon our kinship with our fellow ASEAN member nations," the administration added.

Furthermore, the presentation of each country showcased its unique aspects, including inspired costumes, historical backgrounds, cultures, festivals, and foods. The event was then followed by a short intermission of dance and the sharing of food.

The participants from this university were divided into ten groups each representing ASEAN-member countries, namely Vietnam, Thailand, Singapore, Malaysia, Philippines, Myanmar, Laos, Indonesia, Brunei, and Cambodia.

How might our coastal history have unfolded, and what could the future hold if we never click the register button?

In celebration of the maritime week, an International Coastal Clean-up kicked off with a clean slate and fresh start today with different university-affiliated organizations, September 16. 
Maritime students, seafarers, and maritime stakeholders joined as John B. Lacson Foundation Maritime University (Arevalo), Inc. hosted the said event in relation to the Proyekto Philippines' "Let's Clean-up, PH" and National Maritime Week celebration of the Maritime Archipelagic Nation Awareness Month (MANAMo).

Research Intensive Committee (RIC) chair Capt. Nestor Baluya , 2/M Nicholas Tuares,  and Capt. Kester Ledesma augmented the event as members during the MANAMo opening celebration.

Meanwhile, the said event was also chaired by the Department of Environmental and Natural Resources, Women in Maritime Philippines Association, and Maritime Industry Authority around the coastal areas of Villa Baybay, Arevalo to Oton.

Moreover, the said event is paralleled to the International Maritime Organization's World Maritime Theme: "MARPOL at 50 - Our Commitment Goes On." It highlights the organization's long history of protecting the environment from the impact of shipping via a robust regulatory framework.

Through smiles on faces, cooperation and active participation, preserving our coastal waters extend across the clean oceans as one Lacsonian, one community, and future world-class seafarers.

“This fire drill is a hallmark of our commitment to proactive safety measures. It's not just about responding to emergencies; it's about ensuring they never happen in the first place,” Disaster Risk Reduction Unit (DRRU) Adviser and Safety Officer 2/M Karl Danielle Sira emphasized during the university’s Second Fire Drill, September 15.

The officer noted that since fire drills onboard are practiced monthly, this precautionary method enhances the alertness of students as well as the faculty and staff to respond to fire situations in John B. Lacson Foundation Maritime University (Arevalo), Inc.

Specific fire evacuation zones identified across the campus along with assembly points highlighted the emergency response.

Meanwhile, the drill were also headed by DRRU President Mdpwn. Raizah Joy Mariano, university's DRRU (Safety, Security, and Medics Unit), College Red Cross Youth (CRCY), Student Executive Council (SEC), Emergency Brigade, and in coordination with the Bureau of Fire Protection (BFP) Iloilo.

Furthermore, the activity was based on a Commission on Higher Education (CHED) Memorandum No. 9 Series 2013, which states that every year all state colleges and universities are mandated to undergo a fire and earthquake drill.

Last September 9, the university joined the 2023 Third Quarter Nationwide Simultaneous Earthquake Drill (NSED) spearheaded by the Office of Civil Defense (OCD).
